Who has files open on Server 2008?

Whenever you get an error while trying to update files because they are held open by someone else on the same server, you need to find out who has the files open. I keep forgetting how to check this on Server 2008. So now you have it documented here.

  • Open Server Manager
  • Select Roles/Files Services/Share and Storage Management
  • In the Actions pane, select Manage Open Files

From this window you can select the offending files and click on the Close Selected button to close the files. It warns you that you should notify the person before closing the files and of course you would do that to be nice. It is better if they close the files themselves.
