Consuming JSON from External Sources using Javascript

First you need a handy function to do the GET request.

function httpGet(theUrl) {
var xmlHttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
xmlHttp.open("GET", theUrl, false);
xmlHttp.send(null);
return xmlHttp.responseText;
}

Next you simply evaluate the text.

var jsonstring = httpGet("http://data.gc.ca/data/api/...");
var jsonvalue = eval("(" + jsonstring + ")");

Then you access the properties and place them on your page.

document.getElementById("placeholder").innerHTML = jsonvalue.help;
